Nylon vs. steel locking nuts
The nylon locking nuts have a ring of nylon that the adjoining screw actually digs into for holding in place.  Steel lock nuts use all steel to accomplish the "lock". 

Nylon nuts are easier to get off but cannot be used where high temperatures may exist (brake disks, motors, etc...)
